Discusses Helen Gardner now Mrs. Day whoses hubands an army official in Washington. S.P. Langley, the Director of the Smithsonian Inst sent you the reports. She asks him at the end of her letter if Edwin loves her.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899).
